Wooden sandals have been a symbol of the Vietnamese people for centuries, as have the ubiquitous conical hats. They could be found in every family's household.

In fact, no one knows exactly when the wooden flip-flops and sandals gained importance in Vietnam, but the director of the Vietnamese Ethnological Museum, Nguyen Van Huy, gives an indication of their origin. He believes that the sandal was widespread under French rule from 1858 to 1945. "In fact, we don't have any documents mentioning the history of the wooden sandal," says Huy. "However, my research shows that in the past, both the Vietnamese and people across the region often wore bamboo slippers with straps like flip flops before they wore wooden sandals."

The slightly heavier wooden sandals first became popular with urban trendsetters. But the fashion soon spread across the country, says Huy. During the Nguyen dynasty (1802-1945), wooden sandals were as popular as a pair of sneakers today and as expensive as a pair of designer shoes. Sandals from this period were mostly made of a special wood called "Mit" because of their low weight, strength and durability. "Only rich people wore wooden sandals," says the director of the Art Museum of the Imperial Palace in Hue, Tran Duc Anh Son. "People wore sandals on special and festive occasions. If you looked at someone's sandals, you could tell which class she belonged. "

After many years, the tap-tap-tap went from wooden sandals to a nationally known sound. But capricious fashion trends have a habit of banishing even the best and most trustworthy items in the closet.
